Tomb of Annihilation

This Chult's Got a Death Curse!

Session Notes (Page 9 of 12)

The group finished fighting the slaad, watched as a Gynosphinx finished her battle in time and vanished, leaving behind a ring of spell storing with Time Stop. The group went back to Fort Belaurian and a scout arrived saying an undead army was headed north. The group set up some great traps and a holy water moat but the Scout was mistaken - the undead were headed for Port Nyanzaru.

The group left Shago at Fort Beluarian, and he asked them to keep his mother safe. The group took Lerek’s boat, left their dinosaurs in the Fort Beluarian pen, and headed back toward the city. The group arrived at Tiryki Anchorage to find most ships already fleeing as the undefended districts were being overrun by zombies.

The group defended Malar’s Throat, saved many citizens including a lot of children. Screaming Wind sadly died in the attack after getting children to safety with Philomena’s help. The group got to the Temple of Tymora and entered the crypts as the sounds of zombies breaching the building could be heard above.

The group watched Ifan be stripped of his crown and driven out of Port Nyanzaru. The group investigated the crypt beneath the Temple of Tymora, where something felt wrong about the statue and Father O’Flannigan remained cagey about a luck stone. The group headed to Fort Beluarian by foot, spoke with several people seeking adventuring help, and received the Charter of Exploration from Liara.

The group ran into the Asskicker Mofos, who appear to have replaced their dead comrade with his brother, who has the exact same look and skills as the deceased leonin. The group met Shago, Zhanthi’s son and very confident guide as well as rising star within the Flaming Fist ranks. The group stopped an assassination attempt on Shago by Ombala the dyemaster, who was told to kill Shago as penance for buying illegal fruit by Kwayothe, who hates Zhanthi and happens to be the fruit dealer.

The group took Snodshall Wobbie to the nearby mine to investigate for 250gp. The group discovered an elaborate series of traps and clues related to Chultan history and Ubtao’s battle against Dendar the Night Serpent.

Betty held the rushing water at bay while the team hatched a plan to save the citizens of Port Nyanzaru from a flooding building. The group rode an invisible flying half-dragon tyrannosaurus up out of the flooded dinosaur pit, then sent it to eradicate the Aldani and clear a smuggler’s route. The group acquired 657,000 gold pieces’ worth of treasure as well as a completed Amulet of Resolve. The group freed the captured aristocrats, took statements disguised as Zhentarim.

The group secured signed paperwork from Zhanthi to present at Fort Beluarian for a Charter of Exploration. The group watched Grandmother Sibonessi chastise Ifan for being unable to pay his loan, seized his assets and garnished his income, ruining him. The group gave Father O’Flannigan 200,000 gold pieces to help the people of Malar’s Throat, who have begun selling everything they have of any value to make ends meet after having their money stolen by rigged games in the casino. The group learned that not everyone is afraid of the Death Curse, some welcome it.

The group placed a 7-day rare item order with Taye before long resting. The group acquired a second Box of Colding and stocked up on fish. The group watched pirates be eaten, then saw Heel savage several dinosaurs and threaten them before vanishing into the jungle.

The party’s great casino heist began with deception. They captured and robbed Cassandra and her circle of aristocrats, then used those stolen identities to enter the Dragon’s Hoard under false pretenses and claim Cassandra’s room as their own. With disguises layered over disguises and just enough confidence to carry them through the scrutiny, they passed the necessary call-and-response and passwords, moved through the casino without raising the alarm, and began mapping its secrets from the inside. Their exploration took them through the high rollers area and, beneath its polished surface, to the hidden truth of the place: an underground dinosaur fighting ring where the casino kept some of its most dangerous entertainment and most valuable secrets.

At first the plan did not go smoothly. While scouting the fighting pit, the party tried to befriend the dragon-like tyrannosaur guarding the hoard and failed badly enough that the creature nearly killed them, dropping both Vogun and Philomena before they could crawl to safety. They withdrew, took the night to rest, and turned the setback into strategy. By morning they had devised a more careful approach to the heist. Using their stolen room as a staging point, they silently opened a hole through the floor into the cashier’s room below, then worked their way through the ducts to reach the high rollers floor again without passing through the casino openly. During this infiltration they overheard Ifan announcing that they were on track to repay a loan by the next morning, a clue that sharpened the sense that more than gambling was flowing through the Dragon’s Hoard.

Once in place, the party put the real plan into motion. Bart pocketed 200 pieces of cursed gold from the hoard and paid for it with a supernatural blight on his charm, but the rest of the theft went quickly. This time they succeeded in getting close enough to the dragon-tyrannosaur to use it as part of the chaos they needed, unleashing it against the yuan-ti and gladiator guards who controlled the fighting pit. As the violence spread, Betty released the remaining dinosaurs, turning the sublevels into a stampede and slaughter. Amid the panic, the party seized the green artifact, took the casino hoard, and disappeared before the place could fully respond.

Their escape left devastation behind them. Raptors made it up the stairs and tore through the gamblers in the high rollers room, while the subbasement continued to flood after the cube of force was removed. The released dinosaurs, along with the dragon-tyrannosaur itself, were trapped below and drowned as the waters rose through the fighting levels. By the end of the session, the party had pulled off the heist they came for, using false faces, careful infiltration, and then utter mayhem to crack open the Dragon’s Hoard, loot its hidden treasures, and leave the casino in ruins.

Back in Port Nyanzaru, the party took part in the dinosaur races and treated the day like both sport and strategy. Heavy betting went down on Philomena and Psnappy, the team stacked every advantage they could manage, and the race itself became one of those sessions where the table’s energy is easy to picture even from sparse notes. Philomena delivered when it mattered most, hitting a spectacular finish to secure the win and humiliate the competition.

The celebration led straight into politics. Dinner with Zhanthi revealed that the party’s predecessors had once sat at this same table and left behind letters and items, a reminder that their journey was part of a longer and stranger story. Zhanthi also offered to sign the group’s Charter of Exploration if they would help undermine Ifan Talro’a, tying the race victory to merchant-prince intrigue instead of leaving it as a standalone triumph.

By the end of the session, the party had new gear, new beasts, and a much more direct path toward deeper involvement in Chult’s power struggles. What began as a colorful city event had turned into leverage, and Port Nyanzaru kept proving that in this campaign even public entertainment could become the front end of a conspiracy.
